Reduce your use of single-use plastics:

Single-use plastics are items that are used once and then thrown away, such as plastic straws, cutlery, and water bottles. These items contribute significantly to plastic pollution, so reducing your use of them can make a big impact. Some ways to do this include bringing a reusable water bottle with you when you go out, using a reusable shopping bag instead of plastic bags, and bringing your own utensils when you go to a restaurant.

Shop secondhand:

Instead of buying new items, consider shopping at second-hand stores, garage sales, or online marketplaces like eBay or Gumtree. Not only will you be reducing waste, but you'll also be supporting the circular economy, which is an economic model that aims to keep resources in use for as long as possible. By buying secondhand, you're keeping items out of landfills and helping to extend their life.

Compost food waste:

Food waste is a major contributor to landfill waste, but it can be easily turned into valuable soil amendment through the process of composting. If you have a backyard, consider starting a compost bin to turn your food scraps into compost. If you live in an apartment, you may be able to find a local community composting program.

Repair and reuse:

Before you throw something out, consider whether it can be repaired or repurposed. This could include mending clothes, fixing appliances, or finding new uses for items you no longer need. Repairing and reusing items can help extend their life and reduce waste.

Support waste-free initiatives:

Look for businesses and organizations that are working to reduce waste and support their efforts. You can also advocate for waste-free policies in your community or at work. Some ways to do this include supporting local businesses that have sustainable practices, advocating for waste reduction policies in your community, and participating in beach cleanups or other waste reduction events.

It's important to remember, gradual and consistent steps will make an enormous to your level of waste over time! Don't be discouraged, if you set yourself a new years resolution to reduce your waste in 2023, stick at it and stay consistent.
